Aside from “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, there was no bigger wrestling superstar in the late 90s than Bill Goldberg. Known more by just the name, Goldberg, the former Atlanta Falcon popped onto the scene in 1997. Soon thereafter, Goldberg gained a lot of fan adoration, and his momentum carried him to a WCW World Heavyweight Championship reign. After the purchase of WCW by WWE, Goldberg soon made his debut for Vince McMahon’s company. Despite feuding with Triple H, Goldberg was never able to recapture the popularity he once held in the late 90s.
But could Goldberg recapture the fans imagination once again, this time in 2013? The wrestling world may not have to wait long. The muscle strapped competitor recently tweeted that fans across the world will once again see “the spear.” The spear was the name of his famous finishing maneuver. It helped him defeat numerous competitors over the years.
Interestingly enough, Goldberg also stated that he was not interested in returning to a WWE ring. Which leaves the burning question, where is Goldberg going to pop up?
Of course, the most likely place is next to Hulk Hogan and Kurt Angle in TNA Impact Wrestling. After all, Goldberg has a very high asking price, and it is highly unlikely any independent company could afford to bring the beast to town.
Though it’s pure speculation at this point, if Goldberg does sign a wrestling contract with TNA Impact Wrestling, then, as the wrestling adage goes, “business is about to pick up.” Goldberg may very well be the fire that TNA needs to ignite fans to react to their product. They already have a roster full of genuine stars, such as Jeff Hardy, Kurt Angle and Sting. The company has also done a fantastic job establishing their homegrown stars such as Bully Ray, Bobby Roode and Austin Aries. Goldberg’s presence will attract current fans, and fans that yesteryear have forgotten. In addition, Goldberg is still relatively young and could probably still wrestle his smash mouth style of grappling.
The fact remains that, as of right now, a Goldberg comeback is a fantasy until it actually happens. In wrestling, stars always say their coming back to the squared circle. And many times, it doesn’t happen. Hopefully, Goldberg will make his long awaited return to the wrestling world. And if it’s with TNA Impact Wrestling, at least the company will have one more weapon in their arsenal to battle the WWE stranglehold.
