With Anderson Silva losing to Chris Weidman in July, the list of fighters that might grace the cover of EA Sports' first UFC game shrank to two - UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre or UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.
It was Jones who made the cut, with every other top fighter vieing for the remaining spot.
In the first round, the field of 16 was reduced to eight:
Miesha Tate beat Ronda Rousey
Michael Bisping beat Urijah Faber
Anthony Pettis beat Demetrious Johnson
Georges St-Pierre beat Chris Weidman
Johny Hendricks beat Dominick Cruz
Jose Aldo beat Benson Henderson
Alexander Gustafsson beat Daniel Cormier
Chael Sonnen beat Junior dos Santos
In the quarter finals, eight were reduced to four:
Georges St. Pierre beat Johnny Hendricks
Anthony Pettis beat Jose Aldo
Chael Sonnen beat Michael Bisping
Alexander Gustafsson beat Miesha Tate
In the semi finals, only two remained:
Georges St-Pierre beat Anthony Pettis
Alexander Gustafsson beat Chael Sonnen
And, as heavily rumored over the last week, after 11,000,000 votes, the figure who will appear next to Jones has been announced:
Alexander Gustafsson beat Georges St-Pierre
“This was a great way to engage fans and we are excited that they selected Alexander Gustafsson as the Cover Vote winner,” said Dana White, UFC President. “Europe accounted for nearly 40% of the web traffic to the Cover Vote during the last week of voting. This overwhelming support from UFC fans in Europe is indicative of the sport’s rapidly growing popularity around the world and especially in EMEA."
As part of the MetroPCS EA SPORTS UFC Cover Vote Sweepstakes, one lucky fan who voted will have the chance to be part of Gustafsson’s entourage when he walks out at one of his next fights. Fans are encouraged to check out the MetroPCS Facebook andTwitter to get behind the scenes access to the winner’s experience.
The official retail cover with both fighters on it will be unveiled December 28 at UFC 168. “EA Sports UFC” will launch on Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 in spring 2014.
