The NFL officially announced Tuesday afternoon (May 25) that the 2014 Super Bowl will be hosted by the New Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey, home of the New York Giants and Jets.
"It's a historic moment for the league," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said. "It will be a great experience for our fans. It will be a great experience for the NFL."
According to ESPN, the league's 32 owners awarded Super Bowl XLVIII to the New York/New Jersey region despite what would be a wintry championship game. Other cities in the running were Tampa and South Florida, both of which have hosted the Super Bowl 10 and four times, respectively.
NY/NJ won a secret balloting over Tampa. South Florida was eliminated after the second ballot.
The official tag line of the New York/New Jersey bid was "Make Some History," and it did. It will be the first open-air stadium in a cold-weather region to host a Super Bowl.
With New York/New Jersey hosting, there could be a record-low Super Bowl temperature. The current record is 39 degrees in 1972 at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, and that would be considered a warm February day in East Rutherford, N.J.
However, there's never been snow during a Super Bowl game, but in 2014 that very well could happen.
"Obviously it will be cold, but that's what playing football is all about," Giants quarterback Eli Manning told Fox News." "I've been in the Super Bowl and I've been to a couple of Super Bowls and if you're not in it, the Super Bowl is an event and it's kinda a place to be and there's no better place to be than New York City for that vibe and that atmosphere."
New Meadowlands Stadium is the brand new stadium, which opened in April 2010. It is located right next to the old Giants stadium, which was home to the Giants since 1976 and the Jets since 1984.
The Giants are set to host the first NFL regular season game in the stadium's history on Sunday, September 12, 2010.
