  • Dallas Cowboys Fire Coach Wade Phillips After 1-7 Season Start

Despite beginning the season with Super Bowl expectations, the Dallas Cowboys have had a very dismal season, falling to 1-7 after their loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday (November 7).

The team's owner and general manager, Jerry Jones, revealed Monday (November 8 ) that they have fired coach Wade Phillips, reports ESPN.

"The decision has been made to move forward with a new person in the head coaching position for the Dallas Cowboys," Jones said during a Monday press conference.

Phillips' termination comes less than a year after being given a two-year contract extension for leading the Cowboys to their first playoff win in over a decade.

As the team's head coach, Phillips had a 35-23 record, and led the team to two NFC East titles and earned the Cowboys' first playoff victory since 1996.

Despite Jones saying -- on multiple occasions -- that Wade would finish out the season, the decision got difficult as the Cowboys continued to lose week-after-week. Then, after being dominated by the Packers on national TV Sunday night, in a 45-7 loss, it seemed as though Jones had no other choice.

"Making an in-season coaching change is something we're not known for, and I was reluctant to consider it until this week," Jones said. "But at this time the best interest of the organization and fans is to make a coaching change."

The only game the Cowboys have won, so far this season, was against the Houston Texans in Week 3 27 to 13.

Jones has never fired a coach during the season since buying the team back in 1989.

Phillips will be replaced by offensive coordinator Jason Garrett as interim coach. While talks of who will be fill the role permenantly are still unknown, Jones told reporters that Garrett will get his shot to keep the job beyond the next two months.

The team has eight games left in the season.
