When quarterback Vince Young entered the NBA as the #3 overall pick of the 2006 NFL Draft, he signed a big contract guaranteeing him $26 million. Six years later, reports say the 29-year-old is nearly broke, and in desperately in need of a job.
Where did things go wrong for Young? No one knows for sure, but according to MSNBC, attorneys have been arguing for months over whether he spent his money recklessly, putting himself into financial despair, or if he was simply a victim of inexperienced advisers, one of whom was his own uncle.
Whatever the case may be, he's currently out of a job, and according to his attorney, "Vince needs a job."
Young was cut by the Buffalo Bills, his third NFL team, in August. He was trying out for the position of backup QB, the same role he filled with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011 behind Michael Vick. Obviously, it didn't pan out.
The AP cites his first mistake in blowing his fortune as becoming the first client of 1 Next Level Sports and Entertainment Inc., which was formed by Major Adams, a Houston criminal defense attorney, and his uncle, Keith Young, a former middle school teacher.
"He was just very young ... and allowing these people to have too much control over his life and his name," Trey Dolezal, Young's attorney told MSNBC. "They conspired to take Vince's money. It's that simple."
Young is now suing Adams and North Carolina financial planner Ronnie Peoples for allegely misappropriated $5.5 million of his money. In some cases, his suit alleges the pair forged his signature or impersonated him on the phone or in emails.
The lawsuit was filed five days after a New York lender notified Young that a loan of nearly $1.9 million obtained in his name during the NFL lockout in 2011 was in default. Young is now seeking to stop the lender, Pro Player Funding LLC, from enforcing a judgment of nearly $1.7 million, claiming he wasn't involved in obtaining the loan and that the proceeds went to Adams and Peoples.
Adams and Peoples both deny the allegations. Peoples has actually filed a countersuit, in which he calls Young's unwillingness to accept responsibility "a common occurrence ... as (former Titans coach) Jeff Fisher, (Texas coach) Mack Brown, numerous NFL executives, coaches, teammates, scouts, girlfriends and illegitimate children will attest."
