Nearly two months after his arrest, former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was officially indicted Thursday (August 22) on first-degree murder and weapons charges in the death of a friend/semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd.
Lloyd's bullet-riddled body was found in an industrial park about a mile from the ex-player's home.
According to ESPN.com, the six-count grand jury indictment charges Hernandez with killing the 27-year-old, who was dating the sister of Hernandez's girlfriend.
23-year-old Hernandez has pleaded not guilty back in June, and he is being held without bail at a county jail.
Following a brief court appearance in Attleboro on Thursday afternoon, his attorney Michael Fee said they look forward to a jury trial and plan to test the prosecution's evidence. "There has been an incredible rush to judgment in this case," and the state doesn't have enough evidence to prove the charges, he said.
Hernandez had signed a $40 million contract with the Patriots last summer, but was cut by the team within hours of his June 26th arrest.
If convicted, he could face life in prison.
In addition to Hernandaz, two others were indicted in the case. Associate Ernest Wallace is charged with accessory to murder after the fact, and his cousin Tanya Singleton is charged with criminal contempt for failing to comply with a judge's order requiring her to provide truthful testimony to the grand jury.
