  • Game of Thrones Casts The King Beyond The Wall

Winter is...closer! The role of Mance Rayder, the mysterious leader of a savage Wildling army, has been filled.

Game of Thrones mega-casting news! According to EW.com, the role of Mance Rayder, the leader of the intimidatingly massive army of Wildlings that Jon Snow look out upon in the GoT Season 2 finale, has been filled by the Belfast-born Irish actor Ciaran Hinds.

Rayder, though never seen, has been referred to many times on the show as "The King Beyond the Wall"; a former member of the Night's Watch who's somehow managed to unite the brutal Wildling clans for a giant push South...to the Wall. You might know Hinds from HBO's Rome, or from USA's Political Animals, where he's been playing the Bill Clinton-esque ex-President, Bud Hammond.

CiarĂ¡n Hinds is a great actor. He plays Caesar in Rome. I was personally hoping for James Purefoy (plays Mark Antony in Rome) to get the role but Hinds is probably a better choice.
Dominic West (Jimmy McNulty from the wire) turned down the role for Mance.

Funny fact all 3 men considered for the role were actors in the movie John Carter.
