  • NBC orders pilot for Oni’s supernatural western The Sixth Gun

NBC might be adding a bit more supernatural drama to its 2013-2014 television slate. This week, the network ordered a pilot adapting Oni Press's acclaimed comic book series The Sixth Gun. Soon we may be seeing Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt's tale of ghouls and guns in the Old West on the small screen.

Deadline announced that NBC ordered a slew of pilots this week, including The Sixth Gun. Lost's Carleton Cuse will be co-producing the pilot, along with scriptwriter Ryan Condal and Oni's sister company, Closed on Mondays Entertainment.

The Sixth Gun is set after the American Civil War and centers on six mystical guns, each tethered to a single wielder for the wielder's entire life. Each gun imbues its wielder with a specific dark, mystical power, and the sixth gun, which has been missing from the world for quite some time, is considered the most powerful. When the sixth gun resurfaces in the hands of Becky Montcrief, an innocent young woman, she becomes a target for dangerous forces intent on taking control of the gun, including one man intent on reuniting all six guns. You can read the entire first issue over at ComicsAlliance.

Of course, a pilot order is no guarantee of a series, but there's plenty of rich visual and narrative territory in The Sixth Gun that would make for great TV.
