During a recent conference call to promote his show's 25th season, The Simpsons executive producer Al Jean revealed that an "iconic character" will be killed off in an upcoming episode.
"I'll give you a clue that the actor playing the character won an Emmy for playing that character, but I won't say who it is," Jean told reporters.
As Jim Slotek of Québecor Média notes, almost all Simpsons voice actors have won Emmys for their part (or parts) in the show — some more than once.
Though The Simpsons is technically a cartoon, unlike other animations, characters who are killed on the show generally stay dead.
The last time a major character was written out of the show was in Season 11, when Maude Flanders was killed off due to the (ultimately temporary) departure of voice actress Maggie Roswell over a pay dispute.
The show has killed off several minor characters since, including Homer's mom Mona (season 19) and mob boss Fat Tony (season 22).
It's also worth noting that many characters have died during the annual "Treehouse of Horrors" episode, but those deaths are considered non-canon.
