UPDATE: The brand new episode of The Simpsons Sunday night began with what was a decidedly poignant chalkboard message from Bart during the opening credits, in tribute to Marcia Wallace. Check it out below
The Simpsons executive producer Al Jean has said that with Wallace's passing, the character of Mrs. Krabappel will indeed be retired from the series, barring episodes Wallace had already recorded.
Oddly, the repeat episode of The Simpsons that aired this week in tribute to Wallace ended up being the far more recent "The Ned-Liest Catch," not "Bart the Lover." I have reached out to FOX for comment. It's possible it may be a simple (but unfortunate, given the circumstances) rights issue, given a Season 3 episode would be long out of Fox's typical airing window. Even with 20th Century Fox owning the series, this could still have caused problems given the show is syndicated to other outlets.
