Tim DeKay has been cast to play Senator Maynard Ward on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and that’s a name that should be familiar to you. Remember last season on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. when we saw Agent Ward’s supersad backstory so we wouldn’t hate him quite so much after he (SPOILER!) killed ALL THOSE PEOPLE? And it was really super sad. He was basically a cute little pitbull puppy abused until he won a lot of dog fights. (I still hate him, though. He killed so many people, and he has more agency than a dog.) Anyway, Ward’s path to the dark side began with his sadistic, abusive older brother named Maynard, who also forced him to abuse their other, even younger brother. He was a real peach, and so it’s no surprise that he joined the U.S. Senate.
Dekay, a really capable actor best known for playing Peter Burke on White Collar (and also bizarro Jerry on Seinfeld), will debut as the character in the sixth episode of the season, titled “A Fractured Rose.” I have a feeling he is going to be an antagonist for our scrappy little band of S.H.I.E.L.D. survivors/loyalists. In fact, there is some speculation that he is the deep-pocketed, Coulson-hating Senator who is backing General Glenn Talbot’s anti-S.H.I.E.L.D. campaign.
This is an interesting turn, and one that will probably lead to Agent Ward’s inevitable reintegration with the team. He will probably have keys and tips for dealing with the senator, and maybe that will make the team trust him again? If you are caught up with the show, you know that Agent Ward is currently locked up, possibly completely insane, and definitely super creepy. The show has been riskier and more entertaining so far this season, and I’m once again interested in what happens.
