According to 2K insider sources close to Eurogamer.cz, Mafia III is currently in development at 2K Czech for the next-generation Xbox and had been planned as a next-gen launch title.
Apparently, the next-gen open-world gangster threequel had been slated to release alongside the launch of the next wave of consoles, but following staff cuts at 2K Czech, it's now highly unlikely that the game will make the next-gen cut. Reports put the game's release somewhere around 2013/2014, while the studio attempts to fill 11 positions to work on its next "AAA title".
Should the Mafia III rumours prove true, that also means that the next-generation Xbox is also on the cards for a late 2013 launch. That of course remains to be seen however, and as with all rumours, we'll be taking this Mafia III talk with a pinch of salt, lest we end up sleeping with the fishes.
