Call of Duty and Warcraft aren't Activision's only big franchises these days. The publisher has today revealed that the Skylanders games have grossed a total of $500 million revenue in the US, following the launch of the first game, Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure in October 2011.
Activision had aimed to transform Skylanders into another billion dollar franchise, and as these latest figures attest, it's halfway there. That's before you factor in revenue from other territories outside of North America too, such as the UK, where Skylanders is the third best-selling game franchise after Call of Duty and FIFA.
Sequel Skylanders Giants has made $195 million in the US since its release in October 2012 - including sales of additional Skylanders figures - which is approximately 40% of the overall US revenue to date. This figure eclipsed box office for holiday kids movies like Wreck-It Ralph and Rise of the Guardians. Sales of the first Skylanders game account for the other $300 million or so in the space of just over a year.
“Just a year ago, the concept of bringing toys to life in a virtual world was an untested play pattern that Activision and Toys For Bob believed in. Now the category has been established in the market and embraced by parents and kids everywhere,” said John Coyne, Activision's VP of Consumer Marketing.
“We’re humbled by the continued support and acclaim from parents, kids and critics alike, but more importantly, it’s gratifying to see kids excited about the adventures that await them both in the digital and physical worlds.”
Never underestimate the impact of kids' pester power, right?
