Ubisoft is having a bad week. After having their official Assassin’s Creed 4 reveal spoiled by a leaked poster, the developer cut any potential speculation off at the pass and released a new image, gave some brief details, and unveiled a title – Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag.
This was a pre-emptive measure, a small tease knowing full well that a bigger unveiling was slated for Monday morning, when the gaming press at large would unleash their previews of the game. Gamers were hoping for more details about Black Flag’s protagonist, Edward Kenway, and most likely a trailer.
However, that trailer has now made its way online (see above), two days before it was actually supposed to. Games Radar mistakenly posted the trailer earlier this morning, and now it has permeated the Internet, and probably sent Ubisoft fuming. Nevertheless, for gamers, this is the first chance to see Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag in motion…or at least in pre-rendered CG motion.
The trailer is as solid as anything Ubisoft has delivered for the franchise, and is filled with plenty of iconic shots and epic action. It appears that the mantra for Assassin’s Creed 4 is “more is more” as our protagonist, Edward Kenway, brandishes four pistols and two cutlasses. Ostensibly, the dual cutlasses are this year’s tomahawk.
The trailer also features a brief look at a very cool Assassin’s Creed pirate flag — the eponymous “black flag” — which features the assassins’ logo and a skull insignia. Ubisoft should start printing replicas of that flag now, because those bad boys are going to be in high demand.
As the pirate narration reveals, Edward Kenway is a pirate (privateer?) by day – swashbuckling, raiding ships, taking out rivals – and an assassin by night. Unfortunately, the trailer doesn’t exactly tell us who Edward Kenway is – although he is assumed to be AC 3 protagonist Connor’s grandfather.
There also isn’t a great sense of the Caribbean environments (towns, settlements, what have you) that will make up the open world element of Assassin’s Creed 4. We imagine that, along with a few more details, should hit on Monday.
And finally, the trailer confirms the game is coming to next-gen and is releasing on October 29th. That’s only seven months away!
What do you think of the first trailer for Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag? What has you the most excited: pirate battles, quadruple pistols, dual cutlasses, or assassinating in the Caribbean?
Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag releases October 29, 2013 for the PS3, Xbox 360, PC, and Wii U. A next-gen release date has not been announced.
