  • Kojima Retracts Plans to License Fox Engine

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain developer Kojima Productions has stalled announced plans to release its game engine to the public, according to a report from Gamasutra. Hideo Kojima had previously stated--back in 2011--the company would make Fox Engine available for licensing to students and smaller game development studios.

During an opening event at Kojima Productions' new Los Angeles studio, Kojima implied the engine wasn't quite ready for distribution outside of parent company Konami.

"While, yes, the engine has been shared around internally at Konami," said Kojima. "A lot of maintenance will be involved if we're to get the FOX Engine in a workable enough state to license it."

The Fox Engine provides a starkly visual work environment, leaning away from code-heavy development--potentially useful for younger creators learning to make games. Kojima did state his company is not opposed to "one-on-one" discussions with developers about using Fox Engine.
