Ever since Treyarch introduced the, now legendary, “zombie mode” in World at War there’s always been a question of whether or not Infinity Ward would add a monster mode to their “Call of Duty” games. With the next generation of gaming nearly upon us, it would seem as if we finally have that answer.
Activision has announced that “Call of Duty: Ghosts” will feature a mode known as “Extinction.” In this new mode, one to four players will cooperate to take on hordes of aliens in a futuristic-ruined earth. The mode will feature a blend of survival action, FPS base defense, scavenging, and class leveling.
Will this be the new hot mode of choice for those that like their Call of Duty with some monster flavoring? It’s always been pretty evident that Infinity Ward wasn’t going to include a zombie mode in their games. Treyarch and Infinity Ward have shared an unspoken rivalry, so for Infinity to simply copy and paste their rival’s most popular mode would be a mark against them. However, there has been an interest to do something in a similar vein since Modern Warfare 2. Just take a look at this answer given to XB1 Magazine:
It depends on what it is. For us it didn’t fit in our game. We have Spec Ops which is our off-the-storyline path, but it’s just not our bag really. We like to keep it consistent and in the same universe, not to say that we wouldn’t do something like that in the future, but for what we are doing right now it’s just not something we’d do. We want everything to… like things we do in multiplayer contribute to things we put in the single-player, which contribute to things we put into multiplayer, which contributes to things we put in Spec Ops. If you have ray-guns and teleporters it’s not going to help.
With the slightly futuristic setting of “Call of Duty: Ghosts”, it would appear as if Infinity Ward has finally found an appropriate setting to include a monster mode. The consistency there might be a little thin, but it’s easy to see how the logic in that quote could fit with the addition of this new mode.
