  • Road to E3: New Super Mario Bros. 2

Nintendo is rolling out a new Mario game for 3DS this August. Here's what we know, and what we expect to learn at this year's show.

The biggest video game trade show in the country, E3, bombards Los Angeles with gaming love starting on June 5, 2012. With the biggest names in gaming gathering in one spot, it takes a lot of effort to keep track of it all. Every day, we'll cover a different game we expect (or know) will flex its digital muscles in LA.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 for 3DS is up next. Here's a look at everything we know and what we expect to see on the show floor.

    New Super Mario Bros. 2

    Developer: Nintendo
    Publisher: Nintendo
    Release Date: August 2012
    Genre: Platformer
We don't know much about New Super Mario Bros. 2 for 3DS, as only a handful of screenshots have been shown off since the game was first announced during last month's Nintendo Direct broadcast. What we do know is that the game will be the very first full title that Nintendo will offer as both a download and in traditional retail packaging.

As for the game itself, clues hidden within the released screenshots reveal a handful of juicy details. As if the return of Raccoon Mario, the P-Wing and the Power Meter from Super Mario Bros. 3 weren't enough, the images also show golden enemies and a golden Mario. What do these gold-tinged Mushroom Kingdom inhabitants portend? Hopefully all this and more will be made clear at this year's E3.

    What We Expect to See
Considering New Super Mario Bros. 2 is set to release in just three months, we fully expect to see a playable version of the game on the show floor. We hope to find out all the lowdown on the game's SMB3 throwbacks, as well as to find out what other new power-ups or features the game will be bringing to the table.

Will New Super Mario Bros. 2 utilize StreetPass or any of the 3DS's other unique capabilities? Will it somehow be able to interact with the Mario game that's coming to Wii U? Will there be DLC? Again, we don't know what Nintendo's E3 conference will reveal, but we hope to at least find out the answers to some if not all of our burning questions.
