Nintendo confirms one element of its online system.
Nintendo has confirmed that Friend Codes will return on Wii U. While reports from last year’s E3 suggested that Wii U would abandon Friend Codes in favor of a Gamertag-like system, Nintendo now says that a “simplified” version of the codes will be included in Wii U after all.
Speaking in a recent investor Q&A, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata commented that “we’re not completely getting rid of Friend Codes.” According to Iwata, Wii U’s Miiverse will instead “simplify the process of making friends with another user in the platform by eliminating the need to input Friend Codes.”
While Iwata didn’t elaborate, his comments seem to indicate that the codes could be optional this time around. This aligns with a system he described earlier this year, and Nintendo appears to be trying to reconcile the idea of a unified online ID with its Friend Code functionality.
Nintendo hasn’t released all of the details of its online functionality, but expect more information as we approach the launch of the system later this year.
How do you feel about the return of friend codes? Let us know in the comments below.
