  • Nintendo: Initial Wii U Concerns Similar to Wii

Publisher plans to wait on highlighting future Wii U software as it focuses on system launch.

Nintendo has seen some of the commentary regarding its E3 presentation, and it doesn't necessarily agree with all of the points being made. Of particular concern to company president Satoru Iwata, and how all of this is affecting Nintendo's stock price, is how Wii U is immediately being compared to Wii's stellar performance, how some questioned why Nintendo didn't reveal the system's price and launch date at E3, and how many wondered why the company didn't showcase titles past the system's launch window. Iwata reflected not only on that E3 performance, but the reaction to it.

Many overseas reporters told Iwata that Wii U did not seem poised to be as successful as Wii. "People have forgotten what the real story was," Iwata said, "For the Wii, before its launch and right after its announcement, the feedback was similar to that of the Wii U. In other words, when something unique comes up, it’s difficult for people to understand it at the beginning."

Iwata stressed that hands-on experience can change a lot of the skepticism that surrounds a new type of product. "When the Wii was showcased at E3 in 2006, there were a lot of news stories which reported the strong receptions of the Wii by the visitors to the show; however, the questions I was asked then and there were all tough questions." Iwata noted that six years ago, the same questions about how Nintendo would compete against the likes of Sony and Microsoft were raised. Iwata notes that now, because of Wii's success, many act as if that system was destined for great things, and hailed as the revolution Nintendo claimed it would be. "Nintendo has to fight the lasting impression of the Wii business that once exploded," Iwata noted, then saying that his company's current goal is to "overcome" the skeptics once again before the launch of Wii U.

Of particular concern to Iwata was that many pointed to a lack of price or release date as a sign of weakness or "confidence" in Wii U. Iwata flat out denied this was the case, observing that the company did not disclose many specifics for the 3DS or Wii at their respective E3 debuts. Furthermore, Iwata referred to his public comments prior to this year's show, where he stressed that launch specifics would not be a part of the company's presentation.

While Nintendo put a great deal of emphasis on titles like New Super Mario Bros. U, Pikmin 3 and Nintendo Land, all due at or near the launch of Wii U, many observed that Nintendo was strangely quiet on details outside that window, keeping consumers in the dark about what might be on the horizon.

Iwata noted his immediate concerns were watching over the launch of Wii U, creating a demand for the console through its launch this year, and continuing to push the performance of the Nintendo 3DS around the world. "Subsequently, when we launch the Wii U, we intend to announce the next step by saying what will happen in the future," Iwata said, acknowledging existing concerns about software outside the launch window.
