  • Nielsen: Xbox 360 Most Used Console

January 6, 2010 - A survey conducted by U.S. research firm Nielsen has revealed Microsoft's Xbox 360 is currently the most played console in terms of total usage minutes, coming in at 23.1 percent. Sony's PlayStation 2 came in second at 20.4 percent, and the Nintendo Wii at third with 19 percent.

Household penetration of the 7th generation of game consoles accounted for 41 percent, while handhelds came in at 23 percent.

Nielsen's data also revealed that females account for 45 percent of active gamers (which play at least one hour per week). Female gamers also make up 49 percent of total Nintendo Wii owners and 52 percent of PSP owners.

A Nielsen representative informed IGN the data collected accounted for over 20,000 homes across the U.S.

    Yay!

Did you hear about the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete?
Proving nature's law is wrong it learned to walk with out having feet.
Funny it seems, but by keeping it's dreams, it learned to breathe fresh air.
Long live the rose that grew from concrete when no one else ever cared.

    Doesn't surprise me ..

I'd be interested in the average age of the xbox/ps2/wii consumers vs. the ps3 consumers.

I'd guess... the average PS3 gamer is older than the average gamer of the other consoles. PS3 (until recently) was substantially more expensive to buy and the game catalogue seems to be directed towards a more mature audience.. perhaps following the aging loyal consumer of the PS2 from the 90's (like myself).

With that said, I would think that as the gamer ages his/her leisure time becomes limited and thus "we" have less time to game. Between work, sports, family, friends, and other responsibilities.. I'm happy if I can put aside 2 hrs a week play video games.

This makes sense. A lot of PS2 users became 360 users when it launched it 2005. My only gripe with this study is that they should have used a broader sample. 20,000 homes don't speak for the entire country. 100K to 200K would have yielded more accurate results.

Project Natal is a motion-sensing peripheral set to release this year. It basically makes the 360 like a Wii, except you don't use a controller. You use your body to play the game. So in a way, it is a "true" interactive experience.

You can find some vids of it in action at Youtube.
