  • THQ also charging for online play, Ubisoft joining soon.

If you haven't heard, the big news a couple of weeks ago was EA's announcement that players would need a code in order to play online in their sports games. This is part of EA's "Project Ten Dollar" that was recently implemented this year through many of their games such as Mass Effect 2, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and now their sports games.

Now it seems that THQ has decided to join in by offering a similar deal with their upcoming game UFC Undisputed 2010. If you decide to buy the game new next Tuesday, then you won't have to worry about playing online, it's free! If you decide to buy the game used however, then be prepared to drop $5 for an online pass.

Here's the official statement by THQ:

"THQ is delivering a truly unmatched online gaming experience for fans of UFC and across all fighting games in general. The main enhancement of UFC Undisputed 2010’s premium online content is the new “Fight Camp Mode” in which players can assemble ranks of up to 40 people and train together. This is a significant value-add to the game as players can continually improve their skills by training with their friends and bringing teams of MMA specialists together.

This multiplayer content for UFC Undisputed 2010 will be available via a one-time

To top off the great news, Ubisoft also dropped some hints that they plan to join in on the scam...I mean fun.

"We are looking very carefully at what is being done by EA regarding what we call the '$10 solution,' and we will probably follow that line at sometime in the future," said Ubisoft CFO Alain Martinez.

While I totally agree with buying games new, I'm not sure this is the way to approach the situation. Your thoughts? Will you buy new, used, or not at all?

Gay... not only do they rip us off by charging $60 a game, now they want to charge to play online. Makes me not want to buy any more. I guess the exception for me would be paying to play FFXIV online

What pisses me off more is Ubisoft's DRM crap. To play any of their new games you must be connected to the internet 24/7.

They're doing this to capitalize on used games sales that they don't even make any money off, plus it's also a way to make people that pirate pay a little cash unless someone already found a hack work-around.

If you buy it used then the 5 bucks is a fair price to play it online, the company should get paid for each person who wishes to play their games, stop crying about it and skip the McNuggets 1 day of the week.

Yeah, but it kind of defeats the purpose of buying a used game at a discount. While THQ's pricing isn't all too bad, we have EA charging upwards $10 to access online play. It's just a way to monopolize on the used game market.
