The blow by blow account.
FRIDAY EVENING UPDATE: Oh, dear. The PlayStation Network maintenance that was supposed to end Thursday evening but was extended to Friday morning and then extended to Friday night has now been extended to early Saturday morning. The official PlayStation Knowledge Center is now saying the maintenance that's keeping all users from the PlayStation Store and some users from logging into the PlayStation Network at all has been extended to Saturday 2 a.m. Pacific / 5 a.m. Eastern. We'll keep you updated if that changes.
FRIDAY AFTERNOON UPDATE: We now have an estimated time for the return of the PlayStation Network, and it's a bit farther off than last night's PlayStation Tweet made it seem. According to the official PlayStation Knowledge Center, maintenance will continue until 9 p.m. Pacific / Midnight Eastern tonight. Originally, this maintenance was supposed to be wrapped up Thursday night. The original story and updates follow.
FRIDAY MORNING UPDATE: Although the PlayStation Network maintenance was supposed to end Thursday night, it has continued into Friday morning. The PlayStation Store is currently down for users with other folks reporting connection issues.

Original story follows...
Every so often, the PlayStation Network goes down for maintenance, and another brief round has been announced. On Thursday, January 17th, the PSN will begin a maintenance period that will run from 8am PT until 8pm PT, or a period of 12 hours.
“The PlayStation Store and Account Management will not be available during the maintenance period,” Sony’s Matthew Harper notes, “but you will be able to access online play and apps provided that you have signed into the PlayStation Network at some point between now and the time of the maintenance. So please be sure to sign in now if you wish to access the Network during Thursday’s maintenance window.”
If there’s any movement on the date or time of the maintenance period, we’ll be sure to keep you updated.
