  • 70 Million Xbox 360s Have Been Sold Up 20 million since 2011.

Microsoft has confirmed that 70 million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold worldwide. The figure comes by way of the company’s earnings report for the first quarter of the 2013 fiscal year and represents a jump of 20 million units since Microsoft reported console sales of 50 million last year.

During the first quarter, which ran from July 1st through September 30th, Microsoft sold 1.7 million Xbox 360s, down 600,000 compared to the 2.3 million sold during the same period in 2011. The Entertainment and Devices division, which includes Xbox, brought in $1.95 billion in revenue, down 1% compared to last year. Xbox 360 revenue was down 24% ($418 million) “due mainly to lower volumes of consoles sold and lower video game revenue, offset in part by higher Xbox Live revenue.” Microsoft also reiterated that “Xbox continues to be the top-selling console in the U.S., where it now has 49% market share.”

Microsoft noted that video game revenue decreased compared to last year because Gears of War 3 came out during this period during the previous fiscal year, while there were “no comparable major releases in the first quarter of fiscal year 2013.” Microsoft also mentioned increased costs for “research and development expenses,” possibly hinting at development of its next console.

Wow they've come pretty far. I can still vaguely recall when Microsoft announced that they would be launching a video game console, now here they are millions of units latter. I have to admit that I can remember thinking that this might not work out for them, Sony seem to have it on lock.

I'm old school though. I had an Atari as a kid with the racing game and Space Invaders. Anyone remember the 3DO? Good times

Its hard to say what is the true.

In 2011, begining 2012 alot news articles were released the PS3 passed the Xbox360 with sales. Other sources said this was true, other say it wasnt. So the last years we hear alot different stories and see alot different stats.

The only thing we know is that they are pretty close to each other, and the Ps3 was released a year later. And that the Wii outsold them both lol.

Yeh they probably are on par now. I've always been an Xbox man myself.

I don't see why it wouldn't, do you? PS3 has all the same features as XBOX only a Blu-Ray player (DVD is a thing of the past people need to move on eventually) & free online play.

The one thing keeping me from picking up a PS3 (as minor a problem as it might seem to some) is that damn controller. Was an infant in mind when they made that shit? My thumbs shouldn't touch each other when I move the analog sticks towards one another. And those fake ass triggers suck, flimsy as hell. Both controller & online features/play are better on the 360 but there are quite a few series I'd love to play that are unfortunately exclusive to PS3. Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted series, God Of War series, Infamous series, Resistance series, Killzone series, Twisted Metal, Gran Turismo, etc.. Upcoming games like The Last Of Us & Agent (though I'm pretty sure this isn't exclusive anymore). Not to mention games that are multiplatform but for some stupid reason have exclusive (not timed, but permanent) content on the PS3. Seems Sony is still a bit butthurt about the 360 time exclusivity of GTA4 DLC. Keyword is timed though, these assholes are signing permanent exclusivity deals on DLC. They need to quit it already. It has to be that and/or the series that they have lost entire exclusivity in. Games like Assassin's Creed (yes, the first was originally intended to be a PS3 exclusive), Final Fantasy series, Tekken series, Devil May Cry series, Metal Gear Solid series, etc.. Last generation I had both a PS2 & an Xbox. Loved them both but Sony dropped the ball on the PS3. Not to say that Microsoft hit a home run with the 360 as I was one of many that dealt with that RROD bullshit back in its early days many times over (thank god for that best buy warranty as I just swapped the broken one for a new one). But in this point in time, I'm satisfied with the Xbox 360. Besides, multiplatform games run better on the 360 anyway. PS3 is a blu-ray player though, that's a plus.

It's because xbox is cheaper than ps3 and basically has the same games.
PS2 was good because they had a lot of good exclusives but now Microsoft is buying out most the games such as Tekken, Final Fantasy, GTA and more so there is no need to fork out extra money for a ps3.
Wii is a piece of crap, it sold that much because its the cheapest machine out of all of them.

xbox sells more because they also have a bigger failrate
you can't ever run a whole generation of games with just one console, it will break.

ps plus is worth more as a subscription based service than live, you pay to get online play and a.. chat! that's just stupid.

but i guess it's an important feature for lonely basement dwellers

the fact live is a more stable online service does not compensate for the masses of screaming annoying american kids you get everytime
