You might have heard of a little mod for PC shooter ARMA II known as DayZ. It's a much-toasted massively multiplayer survival game where players divide into murderers and innocents as they brave the perils of a nation overrun by zombies. And Undead Labs' new Xbox Live Arcade effort State of Decay looks uncannily like it.
"The end is here," reads the blurb. "Life as you knew it has gone to hell after the mother of all zombie outbreaks. Now you and the few scattered survivors must band together to survive and rebuild in a 3rd-person action game set in a dynamic open world.
You choose where to make your stand, designing and fortifying your home base, performing daring raids for food and ammunition, and rescuing other playable survivors with unique talents. The open, sandbox world develops in real-time, shaped by your actions, dynamically generating content based on your choices and the ever-increasing zombie threat."
There's no word of a multiplayer component yet, or for that matter of a release date. Read more about the game formerly known as "Class3" on the official site. There's the trailer. I reckon the animations could use a bit of work, but it's all rather special nonetheless.
