  • Gamestop: 'We applaud Microsoft' for reversing Xbox One used-game rules

Gamestop is pleased with Microsoft's announcement that the Xbox One will allow games to be traded in as usual, a spokesperson tells Joystiq. On June 6, Microsoft announced a system for Xbox One that would allow games to be shared only once, and only to someone the player has known for more than 30 days on Xbox Live. Under this system, retailers would have to sign up with Microsoft to resell Xbox One games.

    Today, Microsoft reversed this decision.

"Gamestop welcomes today's announcement from Microsoft about changes in functionality for its next-generation console, the Xbox One," Gamestop says. "This is great news for gamers and we applaud Microsoft for understanding consumers and the importance of the pre-owned market."

Gamestop makes the majority of its profit from used game sales, and following reports that the Xbox One wouldn't support used games, GameStop's stock fell 5 percent. Currently, Gamestop's stock is up 2.5 points in after-hours trading, almost 6 percent.

That's used games, good to see that was reversed. Now reverse the online requirement and you have my money. The whole checking in online every 24 hours was about used games, wasn't it? I don't see why they don't remove that policy as well.

          Edit:

Oh wait, it seems they have done away with the 24 hour online check. So I guess it's no longer an online-only machine now. That's GREAT news! They got rid of the region-lock as well.

Microsoft has backpedalled on its controversial Xbox One DRM policies.

In an unprecedented reversal, the platform holder has ditched the console's need to check-in online every 24 hours. Indeed, you will only have to connect to the internet once, and that's when you set the system up.

Furthermore, the renting and sharing of disc-based games will continue as it does with Xbox 360, region locks have been lifted, and the family sharing plan has been binned. That last one was actually a good idea, but it's a small price to pay.

"An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games," reads the statement from Microsoft's President of Interactive Entertainment Business, Don Mattrick. "After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again.

"There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360."

"Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today. There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360."
I don't get why you have to connect even once but them saying that you never have to after that is great. I applaud the backlash to the crazy policies, the gamers have let their voices be heard. Xbox One, here I come.

For the reason that it still needs to be connected once is why they are still not getting my money. They had crazy policies in place and they get rid of them like that, whats not to say 1 or 2 years down the line once they have my money they dont pull the same shit .... No thanks.... SONY ALL THE WAY!

The reason it needs to connect the first time is to download a patch that allows the system to work offline without having to check-in every 24 hours. If you never connect after that first time, you're fine. They can't patch a console (& apply their bullshit policies) that's offline.

But yeah I get what you're saying. I have that same paranoia about how easily they broke to the pressure. I don't think they'd do that though. The bad press would be much worse than it is now. And after all, that bad press is what made them change their ways.

This shows he deseperate MS is and gives me even more reasons to buy a Ps4.

They were defending it big time and with the first critism they already change it. What a long time vission!

Sony's shitting bricks now though. For a short time they had converted many Xbox fans. Now that Microsoft has done away with the bullshit, not much reason to change. Especially with the better controller on Xbox.

If Microsoft decide to have a package that comes without Kinect, the price will be more in line with the PS4 (perhaps even less). Then Sony's really going to have problems. Lol

Off topic: How did that recent firmware update on the PS3 go by the way? Heard that shit was bricking people's consoles.

No they wont have problems, why they sould have?. All the people that have a ps3, will buy a ps4 as well. Microsoft is the only company losing fans, still after they announced this news. Sorry to say, but it shows how dumb they are.

Its hard to repair the damage they created themselfs.

I always liked the xbox, next to my Ps3 and ps2. But seriously I lost all hope in MS.

I was strictly speaking on people who were Xbox-only. Sony had them converted after E3, now there's no reason to change to Sony. Like I said, if they can get a package without Kinect (price coming down around the PS4 range), they will lose the Xbox fans that were intent on switching over. That was their goal (E3), to get the guys that didn't buy the PS3 this time around. Obviously the people who only have a PS3 will buy a PS4. Lol

Believe me, the controller alone is a big difference. It took me forever to finally decide to get a PS3 even with all the great exclusives I knew the system had. I'm sure many people that said they were switching to PS4 from Xbox weren't exactly happy being pretty much forced into that, because of the controller (which I'm still not a fan of).

That whole "fix their image", "damage is done" shit doesn't matter to me and many others. If you think that Sony cares about anyone but themselves (along with Microsoft), you're mistaken.

Yep, I agree 100 % the xbox controller is the only reason why i want the xbox. If Ps4 had the same controller it would be a no brainer.. Now that Xbox has taken off some of their stupid features, I'm more than likely going to pick the Box. If Xbox didn't have the controller, they would never get a cent off of me.
