  • Looking for overview of available studio acapellas [Academic research]

    Hi all,

I'm doing research on how 2Pac's flow changed over time for my PhD dissertation, and I'm looking for an overview of all available (studio) a capellas that I can analyze acoustically. Can someone help me out?

    Thanks in advance!

There are so many acapellas that leaked throughout the years from his earliest to last works, retail aswell as unreleased songs. There are computer generated acapellas to almost every song aswell. I don't think there's a complete separated list.

Best document for you is probably [MENTION=1104]Crizzo's master sheet. He documented every song 2Pac appeared on and listed their versions (including acapellas). Check it out here: http://www.2pac-forum.com/showthread.php?t=84622

I don't think you've got access to the download section yet, but here are some links:

If you need the acapellas to certain songs let us know, we surely can help you out here.

Please upload your dissertation once you're done, I'd really like to read that.

Thanks so much! This really helps.

The dissertation should be finished some time next year, so I'll make sure to keep you all posted! An earlier study of mine has already shown that 2Pac's speech accent changed after he moved to California, and also that he actively manipulated his speech accent to sound more like a native Californian after he signed with Death Row Records, right in the middle of the East Coast/West Coast feud, most likely because his native East Coast accent didn't exactly help him when representing for the West. You can read my article about it in the book The Sociolinguistics of Hip-Hop as Critical Conscience. I can't post the full chapter here for free for copyright reasons, but hit me up if you want to hear more!

Another study of mine has found that the typical West Coast rap flow is marked by more melodic and rhythmic variation than the typical East Coast rap flow. That article hasn't come out yet, but it forms the baseline for my study on 2Pac's flow, as my hypothesis is that Pac's flow became more West Coast-like as time progressed, especially in the Death Row era.
