  • Synthesizer Advice

I'm thinking of buying some sort of a synthesizer (mostly sounds for some g-funk). Even house/trance, however, not sure of what type to buy. Any serious producers here have any recommendations?

$2000 and under. I want to start off with something decent as I'm a beginner with this.

Damn, with this budget you can get yourself the best Motif out there and have fun with it Until The End Of Times.....

Motiff is not a synth, its keyboard workstation and its overpriced.

with that budget i would look for some Minimoog synth, especially vintage ones, tho vintage synths dont have MIDI connectors so you'll have to make loops inside computer.

But there are few alternative versions with MIDi connectors, but without keyboard so youll need to buy some MIDI keyboard to play it.
Moog Midimini Studio Electronics - eBay (item 230570211406 end time Jan-16-11 16:13:54 PST)
This is legendary MIDImoog (got one in studio here), used alot in 90s,it has midi, but like i said you will need MIDI keyboard to play this synth

Theres also cheaper alternative, brand new Studio Electronics SE-1, i use this aswell , you will also need MIDI keyboard to play it.

also must-have synth is Roland Juno 106 or Roland Juno 60, legendery synth from 80s.

With these you are covered pretty well for all sorts of music.

^I think those stuff are good for people who are making music for living or in music industry for some time, but if you're just a beginner and only starting making music (and obviously have a pretty nice budget lol), then Motif Xs is the best thing you can get yourself. If you'll get it, you won't feel any need to buy anything else atleast for the next 10 years. I tryed to explore it in the local music instruments shop, and I got so addicted to it, that I think I spent nearly 3 hours just while checking all the sounds it has. Simply amazing keyboard.....

              I have Yamaha Motif ES6 and while its good for instrument sounds, such as guitars pianos, and even drums, Motiff synth sounds are unconvincing to me, fact is;
Any real analog synth outshines any keyboard workstation rompler when it comes to this type of sounds.

This thread is about analog Synth, guy wants synth so i named him usual suspects, no matter if hes beginner or top producer, they are easy to use, very versatile (especially when he learns how to program his own patches) plus he will get that classic sound out of any synth he decides to buy from my list, plus price will never go down on this vintage classics, while Motiff after few years goes very cheap on ebay (from 500 to 1500).

Its stupid to compare two different beasts.

p.s. I forgot to mention Minimoog Little Phatty its relatively new synth from legendary Moog company.

my vote goes to Studio Electronics SE-1 (NEW) or Minimoog Little Phatty (NEW) in combination with Roland JUNO 106 (u can get it for 300 usd on ebay, make sure everything is working)

For rack-mountable synths like SE-1 synth, get M-Audio Oxygen 49 midi keyboard (its around 100 usd new)

You can also use it with computer VSTs and samplers.
