How you plan to record sounds out of motif? It would be waste if you would use it with your integrated sound card.
Most important things are:
1. Audio interface
2. Monitors
3. Threated room (for mixing)
...and lets not forget about cables as well.
Using VSTs with MIDI keyboard like M-Audio Oxygen/Axiom 49 in the begging wouldn't hurt a bit, Kontakt by Native Instruments got huge library that could make you forget about Motif, i know some people who sold their motifs and switched to Kontakt VST. Still when it comes to WORKFLOW, hardware beats computer and plugins, hands down because theres no loading time, you dont have to click 50 times to get simple things done.
Dont buy newest motif XF, its just repack of old versions, Motif ES or XS are good as the new one. And especially since your sound is more "old-school" based it would make sense to get some older keyboard/module, if you want those JJ/90s sounds.
As for motif keyboard, Do you really need built-in motif sequencer? if not, You could save money and buy rack-mount version of motif and use it with MIDI keyboard.
MIDI keyboard/controller also can be used to control your sequencer software in computer
