1.Great understanding of production/beatmaking - Thats #1 and most important, you cant buy this in any store.
Thanks to sites like YouTube, and countless of other tutorial sites will save you from hustle so you can get instant visual demonstration on production process for any type of gear/software you wish to learn.
2. DAW/Sequencer - this is your recording/mixing/sampling/midi sequencing platform - Learn it inside out.
3. Audio Interface - Dont expect to work with stock PC/Mac soundcard, they dont have ASIO support, awful I/O (bad sound quality) theyalso have huge latency, totally unusable for recording.
4. MIDI controller (either keyboard or drum pad, but having both is preferred, its much better to have hardware then to make music by clicking with computer mouse, but since you will be doing only sample based stuff you might wont need any controller)
5. Monitors - whatever you choose will be big step up from using desktop computer speakers.
Last but not least important, big collection of old songs, since you will be doing alot of sampling, you need big library of all sorts of music.
Definitively start cheap with most basic setup, I dont know how big your motivation is but remember that having expensive fancy stuff wont make you quality production, its all about the user, not the machine.
