I was listening to some J Cole shit (makes the most simplest beats on earth), and it had me think, can we really call ourselves producers of a track for layering drums over a 2 bar loop? I'm in conflict with myself because I still do it to this day, even though I might add more instruments and sounds over a beat, but I'm resorting to sampling now because VST'S n shit just aren't matching up to the sounds I need anymore, I need a fricken real orchestra group in front of me.
Hip Hop producers who chop up samples, layer drums & their own groove to what their doing, I think deserve to credit themselves a little more to be producer of a beat because chopping is some OTHER shit that does take skill, especially if you're combining like 4 or 5 different songs into the one & going nuts with it, and well...yeah...we all know Johnny J back in the hay day is the king of 2 bar loops and adding his simple drum sequencing over it, & there it was, Producer: Johnny J ...not a very big stretch for me, by the way...for those who don't actually know, a producer is a lot more than just making the beat, a real producer's role is the direction for the WHOLE song, as far as the rapper goes, the hook, the singer...all that stuff, think of them as a CEO to a company managing the direction of their product or something, but back to my question, do you think it's wrong for a beat maker to credit himself a producer of an instrumental for some basic sampling when the music is just already there...
