  • Hip Hop Producing; is it right...

I was listening to some J Cole shit (makes the most simplest beats on earth), and it had me think, can we really call ourselves producers of a track for layering drums over a 2 bar loop? I'm in conflict with myself because I still do it to this day, even though I might add more instruments and sounds over a beat, but I'm resorting to sampling now because VST'S n shit just aren't matching up to the sounds I need anymore, I need a fricken real orchestra group in front of me.

Hip Hop producers who chop up samples, layer drums & their own groove to what their doing, I think deserve to credit themselves a little more to be producer of a beat because chopping is some OTHER shit that does take skill, especially if you're combining like 4 or 5 different songs into the one & going nuts with it, and well...yeah...we all know Johnny J back in the hay day is the king of 2 bar loops and adding his simple drum sequencing over it, & there it was, Producer: Johnny J ...not a very big stretch for me, by the way...for those who don't actually know, a producer is a lot more than just making the beat, a real producer's role is the direction for the WHOLE song, as far as the rapper goes, the hook, the singer...all that stuff, think of them as a CEO to a company managing the direction of their product or something, but back to my question, do you think it's wrong for a beat maker to credit himself a producer of an instrumental for some basic sampling when the music is just already there...

Good thread, I wrote about this few times before. Gonna write more here later.

Most of so called producers who are in rap game are just BEATMAKERS who recycle real production.

But its not about gear, its what you invent and how you structure arrangements.

This is why Dr.Dre is so glorified, like someone said he is like Quincy Jones of Hip hop.

Producing has to come from the heart. But you can just read a few tutorials or get to a $5000 training to be a "producer", and learn how others do it and then just do the same: make simple, 2 bar, shitty sounding beats with 808's. And sadly that's the way popular hip-hop music goes nowadays. That's the reason why we have to keep it real, do our thang and try not to get into the wave that most people follow.

Just on the topic of j.cole production, I don't think he sampled as much on his album...
