Long story short, the maximum loudness going on in modern CD's tampers with the punch and clarity of different sounds, in the video its the drums. But raising the the overall volume permanently changes the clarity of different sounds.

that's almost true but guy here squashed the shit out of audio. There is multiple ways to get "the punch" even hitting almost 0.0, but dynamics of the track that's a different story.
To get more volume of the track : For example if it's drums that is standing out too much etc there is way to turn them down without losing anything, yes anything, even volume.
